Libraries were quiet. That was their greatest attribute to Araemore. As a child, he'd hated the silence. He absolutely loathed pregnant pauses and those quiet moments in between the stars during twilight. They seemed empty to him. Void of any hope or promise and totally filled with all his failures. Araemore had enjoyed being the loudest, rowdiest member of any gathering. Noise and commotion hung on him like a second skin that would shed with age like that of a snake. Now he enjoyed the silence. It was his last great solace. Because now he recognized that it was the truth. It was honest. Before you entered this loud world, there was only silence in your mother's womb, and as you exit it is silence that greets you on the other side. Araemore appreciated the simplicity of the void because it echoed that which he found everyday he looked into the mirror at his own soul. If he had one anymore. It was his assumption that one still resided within him somewhere beyond all reach or hope of resurrection. But it was so cloaked in darkness and stained with the blood of the innocent from his years of depravity that it was probably little more than shredded waste inside an empty shell that was once considered a man. Libraries were quiet. And silence, for Araemore, was home.
His table, as usual, was cluttered with books, tomes, manuscripts, maps and torn pages in every direction with no conceivable pattern or organization that a traditional mind could name. But Araemore was not traditional, in the least. Where others saw anarchy, Araemore now saw reason; where others found disarray, Araemore could now sense the the order. Verena was not a patient mistress to say the least and her wrath was both vicious and complete. He was quickly running out of time to find a solution or at least an alternative that would stay her hand for a little while longer. She'd dangled the carrot of sweet freedom before him should he succeed but also hung the very real threat of eternal suffering should he not. He could not endure an eternity more with his curse. Going hour by hour had become tiresome enough. "The answer must be here somewhere." He muttered repeatedly under his breath. Like a mantra and a chorus that would carry him through to his salvation. If only he could say enough then it would be true. There was a way to circumvent the great god's edict and allow the corrupt free reign in the world again. He just knew it. And if the answer was anywhere...it would be the Tower.
"This obsession will be the death of you."Ba-Gek's face warned as his lithe body moved silently among the legs of the table. Araemore snorted dismissively. "If only." He didn't even look up from his studies as his reptilian familiar placed its powerful forelegs on the back of his seat and pushed with enough force to send his stomach into the table. Araemore barely had enough time to reach out his hands and stop the forward momentum that would have sent the furniture careening into the other library inhabitants walking aimlessly by at the time. "I'm so so sorry!" He clumsily said before turning his formerly trusted friend. "Are you insane! Just what are you about today?" Ba-Gek looked defiantly at him and hissed low as though preparing himself for a battle. Fire blazed in Araemore's eyes but went out just as quickly as it had ignited. "Ba-Gek. I understand. I don't like any of this any more than you do. But we must be practical. It's for both our sakes that this has to happen. No matter how unfortunate the...circumstances." They both knew he meant casualties. If he did this right...they would be free, but many would die or wish they had. Maybe even them. But Araemore was convinced that any existence was better than his own, and he was willing to take the risks to get there. Turning he started to straighten up the mess that had been made and ignored the look of derision he could feel the perentie giving him at his back.

Reina adored the library. All the books, so perfect with their leather binding and their wonderful content. They were something that she never really saw much of growing up, much to her dismay. But, that is a poor farm family for ya; why bother with silly books when work needs to be done. However, she seemed to always be able to find time for books now, in fact, she couldn't get enough of the things. Her favorite were the stories of the legends the kingdom held most dear, most of which were filled with heroics and bravery; things Reina only wished she could be.
She was in the middle of a book on the goddess Verena when the sudden warmth of her familiar on her neck caused her to lose concentration. There you are Yuno. What have you been up to? she whispered to her weasel as she slightly moved her head to look at him. Her small orange companion gave her a lick on the cheek. Avoiding the library for one. I still don't understand why you like this place so much. It is so...quite Yuno said to her as he rested his head down by her neck. Reina simply rolled her eyes at him. The weasel would never understand her love for books, no matter what she said. I still remember the first time you came to this place. You were on a tour of the tower and as soon as the doors to this room were opened, your jaw drooped.I bet you sure looked like a farm girl to everyone else at that moment. He added with what could only be a laugh. Reina couldn't help but join in his amusement. In reality, when she first saw the room, she had no idea the size of it. When she found out how many books were actually held in the room she was almost shocked. And then when the guide said she could read any of them in her free time she wanted to kiss his boots. But she would never say that out loud. even if the potential of Yuno already knowing that was rather high.
Well, looks like your attempt to avoid the library went real far. she said as she closed her book and stood up. Looked like this book wasn't going to be of any help to her right now anyway. Well, I got bored, and you are always fun. Even if you are with those silly booksHe said as he hopped to the floor to walk beside Reina. Well, good. Cause I've finished my classwork early and intend to stay here until supper. Or at least until I find what I am looking for. The familiar didn't bother asking what it was she was looking for, he knew all too well. Reina had been looking for something, anything that could tell her anything about who her father was; it had been something she had been inquiring about ever since she came to the tower and discovered she had the gift. She knew it did not come from her mother's side of the family, so her father seemed to be the only logical explanation. And if he was a Mage, like she was thinking he was, than something about him had to be someplace among all these selves of books. It might have helped if she had something more to go on than her middle name, but she refused to spend time thinking about the things she would never know. Whenever she tried to get any information on him from her late mother, she would always change the topic, and Reina finally grew too tired of asking as it had been made clear that she wasn't going to tell her anything. Holding the necklace that was once her mothers with one hand, she started for the next set of books. The necklace was another clue to who her father was as he had given it to her mother. It had a seal on it that had what looked like a rearing horse in the middle. So, her goal was to find the seal, or something that looks just like it, and hope it was a lead.
Arriving at her destination, Trina scanned the shelves until she saw the book she was looking for. While the book was on one of the higher levels of the skelf, she felt confidante that she would be able to reach it if she tried hard enough. So, standing on her toes she reached up and grasped the leather binding in her hand, successful! Or so she thought. Reina! Look out!Yuno said as the books that were next to the one she was pulling out started to fall, causing her to lose her balance. Instinctively reaching for the first thing her freehand could find she found herself only adding to her chaos. Somehow, the young girl managed to grab hold of a chair just right that it tipped over, even with a person sitting in it, and she soon found herself face to face with a mage she only knew as Professor Morscour.
Horror filled her eyes when she realized what had happened, and she immediately jumped up. I am so sorry...I didn't mean for that to happen... she started as she looked at the ground. Yuno ran over to her and jumoped to her shoulder, holding hi head low as well.

Araemore was apparently destined to get no work done and be plagued with distraction after distraction. No sooner had he sat back down in his seat than a crash at a nearby table turned his head in the direction of the commotion. He briefly wondered if the gods were trying to tell him something and just as swiftly dismissed the thought. The divines that had mankind's best or rather better interests at heart would have very little, if anything, to say to him at the moment. He was after all dedicated to the complete destruction and ruination of all that they'd attempted to build and accomplish in this world since the beginning of known and recorded time. Wow. He thought. And my father always thought I'd be an underachiever my entire life. The half-hearted attempt to make himself feel better fell short as it always did. "Duty calls." Ba-Gek had an expression so chipper that he almost looked warm-blooded."You're quite pleased." Araemore remarked as she walked over to make sure that the students involved were alright.
Sometimes his cover as a professor seemed more grandiose than his true mission as an agent of evil. Who knew students, especially teenagers, could present more vexing and tiresome problems than almighty deities? There were times he much preferred to tackle the qualms of the universe than listen to the 'problems' his students approached him with. They could be just as mind-boggling! Shaking his head, Araemore helped up the young man whose chair had been regrettably toppled over by the girl who was now lying on the floor with her eyes closed. He got on his knees and leaned over her to see if she was still breathing and just knocked out or something worse. Just what I need at a time like this. He thought. Some silly girl to go and give herself a concussion when I have work to do. He sighed as he realized that his books and manuscripts were more pressing to him than a young woman's well-being. I guess the battle for my soul is coming to a close surely. Is there no good left in me? No concern for my fellow man? He masked the despair from his face with calm concern and understanding as the girl's eyes opened. He was relieved, but whether it was from the knowledge that she would be fine or the fact that he wouldn't have to waste time taking a trip to the infirmary, he was unsure.
Smiling at her with an expression that he hoped would put her at ease, Araemore tried to help her to her feet. "All is well my dear. No harm done." Turning to the young man whose chair had been upended, he inquired about his physical state. "No lasting damage I presume?" With a shake of his head the young man mumbled, "No sir," shot the girl a dirty look and gathered his things to move to another spot. Trying to reassure her, Araemore's voice took on what he sincerely hoped was an appreciative tone. "There, there. I'm sure he's just stressed. I believe his trial is fast approaching and the stress could make anyone a little testy. I myself can recall with clarity that I was completely out of sorts leading up to the time of my own testing." By out of sorts he meant completely inebriated for two weeks straight leading up to the event, but he didn't need to scar her with such details about his past failures. His present ones were much more dark and interesting.
Leaning over to pick up the book she'd been reaching for as well as the one she'd been carrying, Araemore was surprised to see that one was a basic manuscript about Verena. There were few in the library's archives and fewer still that weren't in the restricted section, so either the student had gone to great lengths to find it or simply had the most unique sort of luck. Araemore himself had already read this particular book sometime during his first year. It had nothing particularly revealing in it. It was a cursory, politically correct overview at best and shallow at worst. Giving the girl renewed interest, Araemore looked more directly at her to see if there was something he might have missed, an aura or presence of evil, something that had lingered from extended contact with his mistress. But she looked normal.
Aren't those always the most dangerous ones. He thought to himself as he exchanged glances with his familiar. The long, four-legged reptile stared straight at him unblinking in a manner that would have unsettled someone unused to his presence. They were thinking along the same lines. That there was a time when they'd looked harmless as well. A simple fool with his garter snake. And now they were well versed in the dark magics his fellow professors spent their lives fighting and working against. Ba-Gek, no longer the simple snake he'd been before, had grown to a length longer than any grown man was tall though he was skinny enough to be only a fraction of that weight. Dark magics could change everything important about you while still leaving you to the untrained eye as thought you were like everyone else. This mask Araemore wore as a professor disgusted him if for no other reason than it was a constant reminder that this life he wished was his was only a lie. Getting caught in his own thoughts again, Araemore looked back at the girl and smiled, though not as genuinely. Indicating the book, he asked her a question before he held it out for her to take. "Little bit of light reading...Miss?"
