AREAS OF MAGIC You're not strictly limited to these types of magic and, if you have any more to add to the list, please feel free to make suggestions. Keep in mind though that certain types of magic don't fit with the setting or may fit under one of the categories listed below. Mages in the tower are trained in all areas of magic, except for those that may be considered corrupt. Without training, those with magical abilities face dangerous consequences. When a mage does not use his or her abilities, they often go crazy, losing their mind almost entirely as well as losing control of the magic within them. They become dangerous and unpredictable, their powers often lashing out, especially when there's a dramatic shift in the mage's emotions. When it's discovered that a child has magical abilities, they are not automatically graced with abilities in alteration magic, conjuration or any specific type of magic. At first, their powers are sporadic. Something may randomly catch on fire, the weather may suddenly change. There is no telling what may happen and when. For children with arcane parents, it's the parents' responsibility to help their child gain a rudimentary level of control over their powers. For children without parents, children who have been abandoned, or even just children whose parents have no arcane abilities, there are instructors within the tower who are responsible for teaching the younglings this same rudimentary level of control. ALCHEMY Though Alchemy does not necessarily always require magical abilities, it can still be considered an area of magic. Alchemy involves the creation of potions and poisons. ALTERATION MAGIC Alteration magic is the manipulation of the physical world. With alteration magic, you can cast spells to allow you, or another, to breath underwater, to transform or shapeshift and much, much more. CEREMONIAL Ceremonial magic is the practice of using rituals, ceremonies, rites, etc. for a magical purpose. For instance, rituals to bring rain or blood sacrifices would be considered ceremonial magic. Blood sacrifices are considered to be corrupt magic. CONJURATION Conjuration allows you to summon spirits or energy and draw them into the physical world. With conjuration, you could also summon another live being or inanimate object from one place to another. Invocative magic is a large part of conjuration magic and can be very dangerous. DIVINATION Divination is the practice of seeing into the future through a number of different methods(palm reading, cartomancy, horoscopy, etc.). ELEMENTAL Elemental magic focuses on the control of the elements(earth, wind, fire, water). ILLUSION Illusion magic allows you to do such things as create an image inside another's mind. With Illusion magic, you can force other minds to see something that is not there. You can also use illusion spells to force others to feel something that is not there, be it an emotion or a physical feeling. NATURAL Natural magic involves the manipulation of natural beings(animals, plants, etc.) RESTORATION Restoration magic is the healing of oneself and/or others. SYMPATHETIC Sympathetic magic is the practice of using an object to represent an actual, living being. Voodoo would fall under sympathetic magic. Sympathetic magic can be used to both heal or harm another. Because it could be used for corrupt magic, Symathetic magic is used with caution. |
