THE PLOT It is believed that the world was created by the divines, each of them having bestowed their own blessing upon their creation: Ciryatan. Vasilis, goddess of earth and nature offered her gift of land, from mountain tops to canyons and everything in between. Illyri, the goddess of the water element, gave the gift of seas, rivers, and lakes. The god, Forval created the sun, so that life could thrive, and offered to the world his fire so that those who inhabited it could see light through the darkness. Arengar, a vengeful god said to be the jealous lover of Illyri, was master of the winds and storms. He is said to use these gifts to unleash his wrath upon the world. Said to be the most loving, strong, and forgiving of all the divines, Ostgar offered the gift of immortal life to the world, promising to watch over all who sought comfort from him. Angered by his brother's supposed foolishness and arrogance and jealous of the love none would show him, Aldor cursed his brother, Ostgar's, creation. Now, with life came the prospect of inevitable death. Eldwyn is said to be god of the heavens and stars. Supposedly the father of Ostgar and Aldor, he offered to protect and house the spirits of Ostgar's creations after death. The haven that Eldwyn created for these souls became known as Eldenar. Eldwyn punished Aldor for his corruption and deceit, banishing him to the underworld known as Mourinor. There, he would be forced to watch over the souls of the lost and corrupt. It was soon after being banished that Aldor, furious with Eldwyn, came upon Verena. Stunningly beautiful and enticing, Verena was, and remains to this day, the goddess of corruption. Together, Aldor and Verena seek to corrupt all so that they too may join those souls rotting in Mourinor. In order to seek their revenge on the other divines, they built an army of lost and angry souls who would one day march to the gates of Eldenar and burn the heavenly city to the ground. Upon hearing of their treacherous plan, the other six divines sought to prepare for such an onslaught. With corruption spreading fast accross the lands of Ciryatan, they offered gifts to the beings that Ostgar had created. These gifts were given to those who were believed to be true of heart and mind. If was the duty of the Gifted to spread light where there was darkness and restore order where there was corruption. A war was waged that nearly destroyed not only Ciryatan, but the heavens as well. Many of the Gifted were slaughtered by the corrupt, though some turned to the darkness with the help of Verena herself. It was with the help of Eldwyn and the other divines that the remaining Gifted were able to end the war and bring an uneasy peace to the lands of Ciryatan. The war came to be known as the War of Damned. Forced to spread themselves thin, the Gifted disbanded, many still seeking to rid the lands of all corruption, others seeking to further train their powers and mind. Gifts were passed on through the generations, though after centuries and centuries, these powers became more of a rarity. Some began fearing those with the abilities to wield magic while others wanted nothing more than to exploit those who came to be known as mages. Seeking to create a safe haven for wielders of magic such as himself, Arniel Faelbane built The Tower of Faelbane(also known as The Tower). There, he and others not only taught mages how to control their magic, they also learned from one another. Though Arniel initially wished for all mages within the Tower to be equals, it became apparent that leaders were needed. The oldest and wisest of the Tower's mages formed a group known as the circle. It was the duty of those within the circle to guide and teach the mages who sought knowledge and refuge within the Tower. Soon after the forming of the circle, Arniel was named Archmage. Since the initial opening of the Tower centuries ago, mages still continue to seek refuge among others like themselves. Among the mages, age matters not. All who show an aptitude for magic are welcome within the Tower, though certain "corrupt" magics are forbidden. |
